How to celebrate baby’s first Christmas
To celebrate baby’s first Christmas and to make it one to remember can be very exciting. First tree, first presents, first Christmas dinner with the family, there are a lot of reasons to celebrate your baby’s first Christmas on a grand scale. This is the time to recreate your family traditions or even add some of your own. Having said that, it would be wise to add that your baby’s first Christmas is best celebrated without much fan fare because all that your less than a year old baby wants is a dry diaper and its parents’ attention. Here are some suggestions to avoid the usual pitfalls.
A few handy hints
- Keep the whole affair simple. Infants are happiest watching sparkling lights, hearing lilting carols, and playing with colorful wrapping paper and bows. The fact that this admirably suits the harassed parents is just incidental.
- Refrain from buying your baby all the hottest new toys and the latest gadgets. The hand made doll from Japan or the Swiss train set can wait for other years when the baby is old enough to appreciate the effort.
- Try and maintain the old routine. Babies get confused and upset with unfamiliar people and places. This does not mean that you have to give all the festivities a miss. Instead try to maintain the old feeding and sleeping times and if you need to be somewhere else during the holiday season surround the baby with familiar things (toys, blanket and music) to keep her/ him comfortable.
- Be prepared for the baby developing some degree of stranger anxiety and during such times go to a room where the baby can be alone with you and recover herself/ himself.
Do’s
- Make a keep safe box to put things from baby’s first Christmas into it.
Don’ts
- Don’t be upset if your baby has more fun with the box your present came in than the actual present.
