Frosty the Snowman
Frosty the Snowman is a very popular Christmas song and has been a great favorite with children since the very beginning. The song gained enormous popularity after it hit the market and seemed a fit sequel for ‘Rudolf the red nosed reindeer’, a Christmas song that had been recorded a few years earlier and had proved to be a huge hit. The song (Frosty) was not only a cute children’s poem, it also had a feel-good spirit that makes for a holiday favorite.
Birth of the song
In 1949, Jack Nelson and Steve Rollins decided to write a silly but catchy song on Christmas that would catch people’s fancy just as Rudolf the reindeer had previously. It took them almost half a year to settle on a snowman as the central character of their song but they had it ready in time for a 1950 release. Gene Autry was extremely happy to record the song and the rest, as they say, is history. Frosty who simply - came to life, had some fun and then melted, promising to return - was not as big a hit as Rudolph, but still he was big enough to become an event and a lasting classic.
Movie, T.V. serials, sequels et al
- In 1969, A couple of weeks before Christmas, CBS aired ‘Frosty the Snowman’ as a half-hour holiday special. The song was given the form of a story by sending Frosty to North Pole before he melted away in the hot sun. He is followed by Hinkle who wants the magic hat that brought Frosty to life.
- In 1976 Rankin-Bass made a sequel and called it ‘Frosty’s Winter Wonderland.’ In this movie, the children who had created Frosty embark on the mission of providing Frosty with a female companion and come up with Crystal, his girl friend.
- In July of 1979, the studio came up with the last movie of the trilogy with the off-season full-length TV movie called ‘Rudolph & Frosty’s Christmas in July’.
- On 1st December 1992, CBS aired ‘Frosty Returns,’ an animated version of Frosty the Snowman.
- Frosty returned again in 2005 with a made-for-video animated film.
Interesting. I personally love the song and hey, who doesn’t love Frosty. Interesting to read the History. Thanks for that!
