On the Wednesday after Thanksgiving people gather for the ceremonial lighting of the enormous tree which most of the time, is a donation from an individual. The ceremony is usually televised and various performers liven up the event together with musical performances of popular artists. The tree is normally lighted with over five miles of lights and does not have any other decoration aside from the star at the top.
Apart from the city’s Christmas tree, another sight that will amaze you are the store holiday window displays. Each year window shopping takes on a new meaning as the most popular stores in Manhattan exhibit their beautiful creations. When you are in the city it is almost mandatory that you go watch these brilliant works of art and ingenuity. The displays vary from the scenes at Macy’s department store of the miracle on 34th street to the high fashion and authentic antiques of Bergdorf and Goodman. Feasting on all their wonderful creations will truly prove to be an eyeful.
Watching some shows and events in the city is also a great idea and opportunity to add to your experience. With a wide range of performances to choose from, New York hosts a lot of events that will surely suit anyone’s taste. Christmas in NY is amazing. We lived in NY for 5 years and compared to Christmas in VA (where I am from), it was so much more festive. With all of the attractions, beautiful snow and bold holiday lights, Christmas in NY was great. You really feel the spirit of the holidays.
