Christmas Wines

Wine Country Gift BasketsA celebration isn’t a celebration without Christmas Wine.

Prepare

When preparing for Christmas dinner the best Christmas wine server serves the right type of wine with the dinner, meaning if your main dish is turkey then you will need to go with a certain wine which complements the turkey, same if you are serving duck, or goose or ham or any other main course. A good wine will complement the meal not take away from it or seem out of place.

Research into Christmas wine

If you are less than knowledgeable about the subject of wine then you might find with a little research on the internet that you could find some real good wine guides that will tell you the best wines to serve with what main dish. It is about the time of day the meal is served that also matters because certain wines are better for an evening Christmas meal while others are better for an afternoon Christmas meal.

Some good reds for Christmas

There are even wines that are drunk for morning meals, although not usually a popular practice. If your Christmas dinner main dish is going to be turkey then here are a few good wines that will go well with your dinner. Some of the good reds you might consider are: Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah/Shiraz, and Beajolais Nouveau.

Match your main Christmas dish

If you are more into a white easy going wine then you might want to take a chance at using one of these complementing wines: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling, or Gewurztraminer. If your main dish is going to be goose, then you would do well to go with a Red Zinfandel, Red Burgundy, or a Tempranillo. For a White wine you will want to serve, in your best glass, a great tasting Chardonnay, or Sauvignon Blanc.

What about red meat dishes?

If you are planning on serving prime rib with your Christmas dinner as the main dish or any other red meats your best bet is to serve only a red wine, this is because although it is possible to find a white wine that can be enjoyed with red meat it is challenging to find a good match. This is due to the bold flavors that are found with most red meats.

Wine shopping

But for a good match using a red wine you will want to go with Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Shiraz, or Tempranillo. One thing that could come as an issue for you is the price of wine where it could become steep real fast, but with a little knowledge of wines you can be sure to be the hit of the celebration with out breaking your bank.

Christmas wine on a budget

The following is a partial list of some great tasting Christmas wines for under $10.00: Carmenet Cabernet Sauvignon Cellar Selection (California), Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (Washington), Hogue Cellar’s 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington), Forest Glen 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (California).
