Glass Christmas Ornaments
Glass ornaments have been around since the late 1800’s, and first started out as glass beads, which were draped around the tree in strands.
There is nothing more beautiful than a tree that is covered with different colored glass ornaments amongst the other decorations that make up the whole Christmas decoration look. There are plenty of glass ornaments available, things from glass orbs to snowballs. These orbs can differ in both size and color.
The history of the different orbs
The first glass Christmas ornament was created by Hans Greiner, who came from Lauscha Germany. His first glass ornaments were strings of glass balls, which were similar to popcorn strands in appearance. After this ornament took off in popularity, they then started making large glass orbs, or globes. This was done by the insertion of a glass pipe into a clay mold. The artisan then blew air into the pipe to make it expand. This technique was mastered by 1847.
In the 1850, Justus von Liebig perfected a technique that added silver to the ornament, with the addition of silver nitrate. Once the nitrate cooled, the globe was decorated and the hook and cap added. In 1880, FW Woolworth started importing these glass ornaments to the States. By 1910, these ornaments had become incredibly popular, and one could find them in homes all over America.
